05 SOLIDARITY ECONOMY DIRECTORY
2021-2024

"Seeding Solidarity: A Map of NYC’s Economic Future" is a project developed with CEANYC to showcase the solidarity economy in New York City. This interactive map highlights ten distinct sectors of NYC's solidarity economy. Users can explore specific sectors or combine them, find organizations via a search function, and access detailed descriptions, including web and social links for each entity. The map also features overlays for City Council districts, Community Boards, and Zip Codes, making it easy to identify the reach of cooperative and community-based efforts. Additionally, the "Voices" section shares personal stories from individuals within these groups, celebrating the impact and values of community-controlled institutions.

Eric Brelsford and I designed and developed the map to work with CEANYC’s needs: volunteers without web development expertise can edit the directory entries, the map updates dynamically based on those edits as sites and entities evolve, and hosting the map and its attendant database is low- or no-cost using GitHub, GitHub Actions, and open source web mapping libraries.
