ABOUT
Maps and mapping systems are central to my work as a researcher and designer. I am interested in cartography as a process: a collection of evolving methods through which to answer spatial questions, structure collaboration, and reflect on information and how it is produced.
I specialize in working with difficult-to-map archives and sources; assembling and creating spatial datasets; and have focused in past projects on approaches to mapping text, video, and other media. My work is very often web-based, expressed through interactive maps, data visualizations, code, writing, and exhibitions.
I hold a BA in Geography and German from Middlebury College and a MS in Computational Design Practices from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, where I received the CDP Program Award, for significant contributions to the culture of research, practice, and the public sphere within computational design.
I am currently a Senior Researcher at Columbia’s Center for Spatial Research, where I lead the Mapping Historical New York project, and bring my experience in critical geographic information systems, data processing and analysis, map design, and spatial narrative. I am also actively working with members of the Holocaust Geographies Collaborative on a mapping project that uses textual analysis to explore the dynamics and significance of place in a large collection of Holocaust survivor interviews.
Prior to my work a Columbia, I managed human rights casework at Brooklyn-based architectural practice SITU, and was a GIS Specialist and Product Manager at Social Explorer, a website and resource that facilitates access to and visualizes historical US Census data.
